Fuji TV Criticized for Handling of Celeb Sex Assault Case

A recent investigation into a high-profile sexual assault case at Japan’s top celebrity, Masahiro Nakai, has found that the TV network, Fuji Television Network, failed to support its female employee who was allegedly assaulted by Nakai. The report, led by lawyers, concluded that Nakai sexually assaulted the woman and that the company’s culture contributed to the neglect of the case.

The investigation revealed that Fuji TV’s management lacked human rights awareness and did not provide adequate care for the victim. Executives viewed the incident as a “trouble in a private relationship” and allowed Nakai to continue appearing on the network’s shows despite the allegations. The company has since apologized and announced measures to prevent similar incidents, including mandatory compliance training and stronger support for victims of harassment.

The case highlights Japan’s ongoing issues with sexism and corruption in the entertainment industry. A series of sexual assault allegations have surfaced in recent years, including those against late talent mogul Johnny Kitagawa, who managed numerous boy bands, including SMAP. The victim in this case expressed relief at the findings of the report but stated that she will never forget the pain caused by her experience.

Fuji TV President Kenji Shimizu has offered an apology to the woman and has vowed to regain trust with its audience as soon as possible. However, some questions remain about whether Nakai will face legal consequences for his actions.
