Fujifilm has done the impossible – creating a medium format camera that’s compact and affordable. The new GFX100RF boasts a massive 102MP sensor, which is unheard of in a non-removable lens camera. This innovative design allows photographers to think outside the full-frame box and explore larger sensor options.
The 102MP sensor uses actual pixels for every pixel, unlike smartphones with quad Bayer sensors that use pixel binning. This results in stunning images with a vast amount of detail. However, it also means you’ll need high-performance equipment to handle the massive file sizes – JPEGs can reach up to 60MB and RAW files are around 70MB.
Fujifilm’s camera offers advanced features like Film Simulations and in-camera raw processing. But, there’s a catch – the lack of in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) means you’ll need a tripod for slow shutter speeds or use a smaller f-stop aperture to compensate.
Priced at $4899 / £4699 / €5499, the GFX100RF is an investment that justifies its expense. Compared to Leica cameras like the Q3, it’s more affordable. While other options are available, Fujifilm’s unique lens and sensor combination makes this camera a must-have for serious photographers.
With its innovative design and advanced features, the Fujifilm GFX100RF is poised to shake up the photography world. Will it succeed? Only time will tell, but one thing’s certain – Fujifilm has once again pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in camera technology.
