Fujifilm GFX100RF Review: Compact Powerhouse with Impressive Medium Format Image Quality

Fujifilm has unveiled its smallest and lightest medium format camera yet, the GFX100RF. We were eager to see how it stacks up against expectations. Here’s our take on this impressive compact powerhouse.

The GFX100RF is remarkably small and light, weighing less than the GFX 50R and even the X-T5 bundled with the XC 16-50mm lens. The camera’s ergonomic design feels premium, thanks to its single block of aluminum top cover and flush-fitting buttons. A fan favorite feature returns: the shutter speed dial with built-in ISO dial.

The new aspect ratio dial on the back body is a standout, offering options like 17:6, inspired by medium format cameras. This feature alone justifies owning the GFX100RF, especially for street and documentary photographers who value unique perspectives. However, some may find the smaller f/4 aperture limiting in low-light conditions.

The camera’s 102-megapixel CMOS sensor delivers near-unmatched resolving capability, fast phase-detection autofocus, and excellent shutter rates. Dynamic range is impressive, grain management is superb at higher ISOs, and sharpness meets expectations from a medium format camera.

What we liked about the GFX100RF includes its compact body, tactile controls, aspect ratio dial, and reliable autofocus. However, some may dislike the smaller f/4 aperture and the lack of IBIS (in-body image stabilization). Overall, this is an excellent choice for street and documentary photographers who prioritize unique perspectives and high-quality images.

Despite its limitations, the GFX100RF is a powerhouse that justifies its premium price tag. With its impressive medium format image quality, compact design, and feature-rich features, it’s a must-consider for those in the market for a professional-grade camera.
