Fujifilm Unveils Lightweight, Fixed-Lens Medium Format Camera

Fujifilm has announced its latest medium format camera, the GFX100RF, which stands out from its predecessors with a lighter body and fixed-lens design. The 35mm lens (equivalent to 28mm in full frame) offers versatility and can be digitally extended to 45mm, 63mm, and 80mm.

The camera’s compact design is part of Fujifilm’s efforts to bring a look similar to the X100VI series, while still delivering an incredible level of detail thanks to its 102-megapixel sensor. The GFX100RF will be available in April for $4,899.95 and weighs just 1.62 pounds (735 grams).

The camera features a precision-crafted aluminum top plate and offers a range of advanced capabilities, including a permanently-affixed f/4 lens with a minimum focusing distance of 20 centimeters. However, it lacks in-body image stabilization, which is disappointing given its premium price tag.

Fujifilm’s design decisions likely contributed to the camera’s compact size, as they adopted a leaf shutter system instead of a focal plane shutter system. This allowed for significant reduction in size and syncing of flash at any shutter speed.

The GFX100RF also includes an aspect ratio dial with nine settings, a built-in four-stop ND filter, and a high-resolution 5.76-million dot electronic viewfinder. The camera’s touchscreen LCD is 3.15 inches and has 2.1 million dots.

Fujifilm’s answer to the Leica Q3 is sure to appeal to deep-pocketed photographers looking for an alternative with a similar look and feel, despite its limitations. A review of the camera will be published in the near future.
