Funko Fusion Lays Off 20 Staffers After Commercial Failure

Funko Fusion, a game released last year for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, has faced an underwhelming reception. The game’s Metacritic score stands at 54, indicating poor reviews from critics. The commercial performance also failed to meet expectations, prompting recent layoffs at developer 10:10 Games.

The studio’s first game, Funko Fusion was intended to be its flagship title. However, the lukewarm response has led to funding issues for more than one project. As a result, around 20 staff members were informed that there isn’t enough work to support the entire team.

Staff members have reported being offered minimal severance packages and encouraged to take holiday time to avoid paying out unused vacation days. The layoffs come as part of an unfortunate trend in the video game industry, where studios of all sizes face financial challenges.

Funko Fusion’s commercial failure was predicted by several signs prior to launch. Despite having acquired rights to popular IPs like Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, and Five Nights at Freddy’s, the game struggled to generate interest. The recent release of a DLC pack based on Universal Monsters properties may not be enough to salvage the situation.

The physical release of Funko Fusion for Nintendo Switch is set for next month, but its fate remains uncertain. If 10:10 Games shifts focus towards future projects, it could impact the game’s ongoing support. The studio’s intentions and plans remain unclear, leaving fans concerned about the future of Funko Fusion.
