FX has decided not to renew drama series The Old Man for a third season, marking the end of Dan Chase’s (Jeff Bridges) off-the-grid adventures. The show’s production was halted multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the WGA strike.
The Old Man, which also stars John Lithgow, Amy Brenneman, and Alia Shawkat, had a strong start with its June 2022 premiere, becoming the most-watched FX series debut on Hulu in its opening weekend. The show’s ratings declined for its second season, premiering in September after a two-year gap.
Despite this, the series received critical acclaim, earning three Critics Choice TV nominations, including Best Drama Series and Best Lead Actor in Drama Series for Bridges. Executive producer Warrren Littlefield praised the cast and crew, saying they had “made 15 episodes in five years; what a crazy journey it’s been.”
The Old Man is based on Thomas Perry’s bestselling book of the same name and follows Dan Chase as he reconciles his past with an assassin trying to take him out. The show was created by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine, with a large team of executive producers.
Fans are left feeling frustrated and disappointed after being “left hanging” without closure from the end of Season 2. However, there is always the option to read Thomas Perry’s book for further insight into Dan Chase’s story.
