G7 Allies Back Ukraine, Trump’s Trade Policies Divide Bloc

Top diplomats from the Group of 7 industrialized democracies agreed on a joint statement expressing support for Ukraine despite President Donald Trump’s trade policies and comments about Canada overshadowing the talks. The communique reaffirmed Ukraine’s territorial integrity and right to exist, while calling for Russia to agree to a ceasefire on equal terms.

Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum and threats of additional levies if retaliation occurred raised concerns about the bloc’s unity, but diplomats rallied around his Ukraine peace plan. The G7 statement also emphasized the need for robust security arrangements to ensure Ukraine can deter and defend against any renewed acts of aggression.

Canada was a focal point, with many allies appealing to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to use his influence to spare the country from harsh trade treatment. Trump has said he will not relent, but Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly stood firm on her country’s sovereignty.

The G7 meeting concluded with a final communique that presented common positions on Ukraine, the Middle East, wars in Africa, and Chinese activity in the South China Sea. Despite tensions, diplomats acknowledged a unified conference where they found common ground and expressed warmth among partners.
