Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin has teamed up with Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson to create a wildly satirical film called “Rumours”. The movie follows a group of bumbling world leaders who meet at a G7 summit, only to find themselves lost in the woods, confronting their own personal demons.
The film boasts an all-star cast, including Charles Dance as US President Edison Wolcott, Denis Ménochet as French President Sylvain Broulez, and Roy Dupuis as Canadian PM Maxime Laplace. Cate Blanchett channels Angela Merkel in her role as Chancellor Hilda Ortmann, who is keen on “bilateral management”.
As the leaders struggle to understand what’s happening, they’re joined by Alicia Vikander as the Secretary General of the European Commission, speaking Swedish that no one can understand. The film descends into chaos, with zombies and giant brains making appearances, all while the leaders try to save the world.
Despite a few missteps, “Rumours” is a laugh-out-loud satire that pokes fun at ineffectual leaders and their empty rhetoric. With its unique brand of absurdism, the film serves as a reminder that world leaders who think they can solve problems with cookie-cutter clichés will ultimately lead to disaster.
“Rumours” premiered at Cannes earlier this year and is set to start its European rollout in the UK and Ireland next week.
