Gabbard’s Confirmation Hurdles as Tough Lift for Trump in Senate GOP

Tulsi Gabbard, President-elect Trump’s pick to head the nation’s intelligence apparatus, faces a tough confirmation path due to concerns about her foreign policy dealings and trustworthiness. A number of senators view her as the most difficult to confirm among Trump’s nominees.

GOP senators are skeptical about Gabbard’s views on Ukraine, echoing Russian state media praise for her past remarks, and her support for Syrian President Bashar Assad, who is considered a “brutal dictator.” Some believe she may be compromised due to her past as a Democrat and visits with Russia.

Despite these concerns, some top Democrats disagree, saying Gabbard is not a Russian asset. However, it’s unlikely she’ll receive Democratic votes, which could put the confirmation at risk if three GOP senators vote against her.

Trump’s other nominees, Pete Hegseth for Pentagon and Kash Patel for FBI director, also face hurdles. Hegseth stepped down from veterans organizations due to allegations of financial mismanagement and sexual improprieties. Kash Patel plans to purge disloyal FBI personnel and close the D.C. headquarters.

Senate Republicans will assess each nominee’s qualifications and fit for their roles, with some indicating they want to give Trump deference on his selections. Gabbard is expected to meet with Senate Republicans on Monday to address her confirmation concerns.
