Gaijin Entertainment has enhanced two of its games for Sony’s newly released PS5 Pro console at launch: Enlisted, a first-person tactical multiplayer WWII shooter, and War Thunder, a vehicle combat multiplayer game. We spoke with Graphics Programmer Gergo Horvath about the improvements made to leverage the PS5 Pro’s powerful hardware.
According to Horvath, while the PS5 Pro’s improvement over the PS5 is smaller than expected, it still achieves its goal thanks to PSSR (PlayStation Super Resolution), which he believes is superior to AMD FSR and on par with NVIDIA DLSS and Intel XeSS. The addition of Machine Learning Architecture enabled by PSSR allows for rendering in lower resolutions while maintaining visual fidelity, freeing up resources.
Compared to the jump between PS4 Pro and PS5, Horvath notes that the difference is less substantial. However, the focus on providing substantially better ray tracing this time around has been successful. The PS5 Pro version of Enlisted features dynamic resolution switching with upscaling techniques, enabling 4K@120FPS gaming, while War Thunder will offer 4K@120FPS resolution from launch.
PSSR is currently being used in Enlisted and has been found to be on par with other ML-based super resolution methods. Horvath praises its performance, noting that it produces less blur and ghosting compared to AMD FSR.
The PS5 Pro version of the game will offer a similar level of graphics settings to its PC counterpart, but at approximately 75% capacity. Ultimately, console pricing is up to gamers’ expectations, as calculating a “fair price” based solely on hardware does not make sense.
Note: PSSR stands for PlayStation Super Resolution.
