The city of Gainesville has been awarded $11.65 million in federal grant funding to build 47 new electric vehicle charging stations across the area. The funds will enable the construction of dual-port stations capable of charging up to 94 vehicles at a time.
The proposed sites include municipal locations, community centers, and public parks. Alachua County and local businesses are also partnering with the city to support the project. Gainesville Mayor Harvey Ward stated that the new chargers will help increase EV adoption and make it easier for residents to access charging stations across the city.
The $11 million grant is part of a larger effort to build out Alternative Fuel Corridors, which provide options such as electric vehicle charging, hydrogen, natural gas, and propane. The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Gainesville by supporting the transition to clean energy.
In 2018, the city set a goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2045. With this new funding, the city will continue its efforts to reduce carbon emissions from transportation and energy generation. Installation of the charging stations is expected to begin in late 2027, following design and site improvement work scheduled for 2026.
