Galaxies Collide 12bn Years Ago to Form Big Ones

Researchers at the University of Southampton have solved an “intergalactic mystery” of how elliptical galaxies were created. A study published in Nature suggests that massive collisions between galaxies, occurring around 8-12 billion years ago, led to the formation of some of the universe’s largest galaxies. The team analyzed over 100 star-forming galaxies using the world’s largest radio telescope, Alma, and found evidence that spheroids form directly through intense episodes of star formation in galaxy cores. This new understanding could provide a more complete picture of early galaxy formation and deepen our knowledge of the universe’s evolution since its beginning.
