Gallup Stops Tracking Presidential Approval Ratings After 88 Years

Gallup, a leading public opinion polling agency, will no longer track presidential approval ratings after nearly nine decades. The decision comes as President Donald Trump continues to scrutinize and publicly criticize media companies that report unfavorable numbers.

According to a spokesperson for the agency, Gallup’s focus is shifting towards long-term, methodologically sound research on issues that shape people’s lives. The company will continue its polling efforts through various series, including the Gallup Poll Social Series, the World Poll, and US and global research.

This change marks an end to a widely cited barometer of public opinion, which has been in use since Harry Truman’s presidency. Trump has been critical of polling organizations and media companies that portray him negatively, and has threatened to expand his lawsuit against the New York Times over its polling methodology.
