Game Awards 2024: What’s in Store for Big Announcements?

The 10th anniversary of the Geoff Keighley-hosted event is approaching, and rumors are swirling about what big announcements will be made during the show. However, most of the buzz surrounds video game developers and publishers releasing new trailers and details about their titles.

Keighley says that while people get excited to see familiar announcements, he’s more interested in surprising them with unknown information. “I always say, people get excited to see one thing because they know it exists — but what about all those things that you don’t know exist? That’s what’s kind of fun,” Keighley tells Variety.

The Game Awards team is tight-lipped about specific announcements, but executive producer Kimmie Kim says the show will focus on the future and not just last year’s releases. “We’re going to tip our hat to some great people and moments that have been part of our show’s history — but we’re also going to focus a lot on the future.”

Over the past decade, the Game Awards has gained trust with the gaming industry by breaking big moments and publishers plan a year out to release their titles during the show. The production quality will evolve this year, featuring more LED screens than ever before.

The team is monitoring the SAG-AFTRA strike against major gaming publishers and keeping it in mind when booking talent for the show. Keighley says they want to be respectful of performers and their choices during the evolving situation.

As the industry has grown, so has the prestige of the Game Awards, while maintaining its indie status on YouTube. The team feels like a community coming together, which is helpful for producing the show and creating a morale booster.

Director Richard Preuss agrees that the show is more than just awards – it’s a celebration of the industry. He says they’re working to improve the runtime by pumping gas and brakes to keep the show tight but also letting things breathe appropriately.

The Game Awards 2024 promises to be an exciting event with big announcements, surprises, and a focus on the future.
