Gaming Marathon Raises $2.5M for Cancer Research in Pittsburgh

A week-long speedrunning marathon in Downtown Pittsburgh has raised a record-breaking $2.5 million for cancer research, exceeding the organization’s initial goal. The event, Awesome Games Done Quick, took place at the Wyndham Grand Hotel and featured top gamers competing to complete popular video games as quickly as possible.

The marathon, which was the second year it came to Pittsburgh, drew in viewers from around the globe and showcased various speedrunning techniques, including using alternative controllers like a Roland Aerophone. This innovative approach not only entertained but also highlighted the importance of accessibility in gaming.

According to Jody Hoyos, CEO of the Prevent Cancer Foundation, the event’s growth is a testament to the community’s dedication to giving back. “The energy, the positivity, and the support of this community is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before,” she said. The foundation has been working with Awesome Games Done Quick for 14 years, and this year’s donations far exceeded the initial goal, raising $2,556,305 for research funding.
