Haitian capital Port-au-Prince is severely affected by gang violence, with over 1.3 million people displaced and 4,000 individuals killed in the past year alone. The situation has deteriorated to a point where international commercial flights have been suspended, leaving the city isolated.
Gang control has expanded across the metropolitan area, shrinking the state’s capacity to govern and leading to worsening food insecurity and humanitarian needs. Vigilante groups are also emerging, operating outside of existing laws and often colluding with gangs, fuelling illicit arms markets and increasing human trafficking risks.
The situation is further complicated by allegations of human trafficking, including suspected organ trade, which have prompted police raids on medical facilities. The international community is urged to act decisively to prevent the “total collapse of state presence” in Port-au-Prince.
