Armed gangs have stolen hundreds of United Nations aid trucks as convoys entered the Gaza Strip, leaving thousands of pounds of food and supplies for the local population without access. The New York Times reported that truck driver Hazem Isleem was held at gunpoint by looters while trying to deliver aid.
With Hamas’s power in much of Gaza dismantled, gangs have filled the power vacuum, causing many aid groups to abandon their deliveries. As a result, UNRWA has stopped sending aid through the Kerem Shalom crossing due to safety concerns.
The situation is dire, with a 55-pound sack of flour costing up to $220 in Gaza. This has forced bakeries in southern and central Gaza to temporarily close. A bakery owner, Abdelhalim Awad, stated that the “ordinary Gazan’s dream” is now just obtaining a piece of bread, highlighting the severity of the crisis.
