A gas explosion at a shopping mall in Taiwan’s city of Taichung has killed at least five people and injured several others, according to authorities. The blast occurred midday on the 12th floor of the building, where a food court was under construction.
The explosion caused significant damage, with window panels falling onto sidewalks and roads below, and smoke rising from the 12th floor. Rescue operations are ongoing, with over 130 firefighters on the scene.
Five people have died, and at least 20 others were injured, with about 235 people evacuated from the building and area. Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has activated government agencies to respond to the incident, including the health ministry.
The cause of the accident is currently under investigation. This incident marks another devastating gas explosion in Taiwan, which killed over two dozen people and injured hundreds more in Kaohsiung in 2014.
