Instead, he advocates for continuing reductions in carbon emissions while providing aid to countries most affected by global warming.
Gates believes affordable clean energy has made tremendous progress, but the focus should shift towards helping vulnerable populations. He emphasized the need to help people in poor countries who are struggling with preventable diseases and starvation due to climate change.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which Gates co-founded, has been working on various initiatives such as healthcare, education, and disease eradication in third-world countries. In 2023, they handed out $6.1 billion in grants.
Gates recently wrote a memo about shifting focus from reducing temperature rise to preventing starvation and death by preventable diseases. He believes climate change will have serious consequences, particularly for poor countries, but it won’t lead to humanity’s demise.
The pace of innovation in clean energy has accelerated, with cheap solar and wind energy replacing coal, oil, and natural gas plants. Gates also discussed the use of artificial intelligence to help small farmers prepare for monsoons and develop drought-resistant crops.
However, money for climate change adaptation is shrinking due to reduced foreign aid budgets from rich countries, led by the US. Gates criticized these cuts and emphasized the need for continued research and support for developing countries. He envisioned a world where everyone can live a healthy life regardless of their birthplace.
