A humanitarian crisis deepens in Gaza as desperate civilians looted nearly 80 aid trucks carrying food, including flour, on Saturday. The UN World Food Programme warned that famine conditions worsen, with 77 trucks stopped and their contents taken by hungry people trying to feed their families.
The latest incident occurred near Netzarim in central Gaza, where 20 trucks were ransacked, and in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, where about 50 flour trucks had their cargoes stripped. Videos showed dozens of people carrying away sacks of flour, as crowds rushed to grab the aid.
Hunger has spread in Gaza, with UN agencies warning of impending famine unless a drastic scaling up of aid enters the territory and is distributed across it. The situation remains volatile, with multiple incidents of looting reported.
Last week, chaos erupted when tens of thousands of starving Palestinians arrived at new food distribution sites, resulting in 11 deaths and dozens of injuries. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) has been criticized by UN aid agencies for violating humanitarian principles and raising risks for Palestinians.
The GHF says it is continuing to scale up food distribution, distributing 30 truckloads on Saturday alone. However, the UN’s aid agencies argue that only a fraction of daily needs are being met, with over 90% of trucks arriving in Gaza not being distributed safely due to coordination issues.
