A severe lack of fuel and flour has forced all bakeries in Gaza to close, exacerbating the famine crisis in the strip, according to local authorities. The closures will accelerate the spread of famine, threatening the lives of innocent civilians, particularly children, patients, and the elderly.
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) confirmed that its 25 bakeries in Gaza have shut down due to the shortage. Supplies will last for two weeks, after which WFP plans to distribute its final food parcels. Locals are already feeling the dire impact, with many struggling to find bread and other essential items.
The Israeli blockade, imposed in early March, has severely limited the supply of humanitarian aid into Gaza. The head of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, stated that this is the longest period without supplies since the war began. Medical supplies are also running low, with MSF warning of a shortage of critical medications.
The closure of bakeries will impact hundreds of thousands of people who rely on them for food, and the international community is urged to pressure Israel into reopening the crossings. The situation remains dire, with many Palestinians facing extreme difficulties in accessing basic necessities.
