The fragile two-month ceasefire in Gaza came to an abrupt end on Tuesday morning, as Israeli airstrikes caused widespread destruction and chaos. The al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital emergency room was inundated with over 65 people, many women and children, all with open wounds, while the Nasser hospital in Khan Younis saw a similar scene of “wave after wave” of casualties.
According to Palestinian medical officials, more than 200 people were killed on Tuesday alone, with hundreds more injured. The overall death toll in Gaza is expected to reach 50,000, mostly women and children, within five days, while over 113,000 have been injured.
Israeli military officials claim that targets “terrorist” in nature were attacked during the airstrikes. However, accusations of civilian casualties persist, with Hamas denying allegations of using civilians as human shields.
Medical professionals working at Nasser hospital describe a scene of unimaginable horror, where children were often admitted even when their injuries were fatal, and some patients had to be told there was nothing that could be done due to lack of resources. The healthcare system in Gaza is severely strained, with only 22 major health facilities still functioning.
The United Nations has warned of an “overwhelmed” response from its office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs, citing shortages of essential supplies and a catastrophic impact on the already struggling healthcare system.
