Gaza Cease-Fire Deal Hangs in Balance as Negotiations Stumble

The future of the Gaza cease-fire deal is uncertain, with negotiations between Israel, Hamas, and other parties faltering. Nearly a week after the first stage expired, talks are stuck on key issues.

Israel and Hamas agreed to a truce in January that would free hostages held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. However, the two sides committed to a complex plan meant to build momentum toward a comprehensive cease-fire. Despite efforts by Qatar and Egypt, the six-week period ended with little apparent success, and Israel mostly closed crossings into the Gaza Strip, stopping aid from entering.

The Trump administration has sent mixed signals on the next steps. Officials say they hope to reach the second phase of the cease-fire, but Mr. Netanyahu’s proposal breaks significantly with the truce signed in January. The plan would allow Israel to get more hostages back without giving Hamas any of its core demands.

President Trump has issued proposals that have rattled the region, including urging the permanent displacement of Gaza’s Palestinian residents and a U.S.-led takeover of the territory. He has also issued ultimatums to Hamas, contradicting the staggered releases prescribed by the cease-fire agreement.
