Gaza Conflict Leaves Over 55,000 Palestinians Dead

The death toll in the Israel-Hamas conflict has climbed to over 55,000, with at least 21 civilians killed while on their way to aid distribution sites. The Gaza Health Ministry reported that women and children make up more than half of the dead, with a total of 127,394 wounded since the start of the war.

The Israeli army fired warning shots in central Gaza toward “suspects” who posed a threat to troops. However, the circumstances surrounding the deaths are unclear. The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants but has stated that Hamas militants operate in populated areas, leading to civilian casualties.

In addition to the reported casualties, many more Palestinians are believed to be buried under rubble or in inaccessible areas. The war has also left 53 captives held by Hamas, with less than half of them believed to be alive.

The situation at aid hubs is chaotic, with 14 people killed while collecting aid near Rafah and seven more fatalities reported in central Gaza. Israel says the new aid system is designed to prevent Hamas from siphoning off aid but critics argue it violates humanitarian principles by allowing Israel control over aid distribution.

Israel recently recovered two additional hostages held in Gaza, bringing the total number of captives released to more than half. The war has been ongoing since October 2023, with Hamas demanding a lasting ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal in exchange for hostage releases.

The international community rejects Israel’s plan to control Gaza indefinitely and force part of its population to emigrate to other countries, viewing it as a violation of international law.
