At least 94 Palestinians were killed by Israeli military fire across Gaza on Sunday, with nearly 100 deaths reported overall. The deadliest incident occurred near the Israeli border area of Zikim, where at least 81 Palestinians were killed while trying to grab food aid from UN World Food Programme trucks.
The Palestinian Red Crescent said Israeli forces targeted civilians waiting for humanitarian aid north of Beit Lahia. In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces claimed that troops fired warning shots after encountering thousands of Palestinians gathered in northern Gaza, but an “initial review suggests” the reported casualties do not align with their information.
The World Food Programme said its 25-truck convoy came under fire when it encountered massive crowds of hungry civilians at checkpoints. The organization condemned any violence involving civilians seeking humanitarian aid and called for protection of all civilians and aid workers.
Sunday was one of the deadliest days Gaza health officials have recorded in recent months for Palestinians seeking aid due to severe food shortages and widespread hunger. Israeli forces announced new evacuations in central Gaza, urging people to leave their homes for safety.
The conflict has sparked international condemnation, with Pope Leo XIV calling for an “immediate halt to the barbarity” in Gaza.
