Gaza Crisis Deepens as 60+ Killed in Israeli Strikes

At least 60 people have been killed in Israeli strikes across Gaza in the past 24 hours, according to the territory’s civil defense agency. The Palestinian population is facing severe malnutrition and famine due to the ongoing Israeli blockade of humanitarian aid.

The strikes targeted military compounds, weapons storage facilities, and sniper posts, according to the Israeli army. However, Palestinian hospital officials claim that hospitals were also attacked by Israeli tanks and drones on Thursday, causing extensive damage and fires.

The Palestinian Red Crescent and UN agencies are warning of a famine crisis, with reports of children dying from starvation-related deaths. The West Bank-based Palestinian Authority health minister, Maged Abu Ramadan, described the situation as “starvation-related deaths”.

Despite international pressure, Israel has only allowed limited goods to reach Gaza, including flour, food, medical equipment, and pharmaceuticals. The UN secretary general, António Guterres, said that this amount of aid is not sufficient to address the crisis, which is putting more people at risk of dying.

Medical supplies are running low, with over 40% of essential medicines no longer available. Treatments for skin diseases, eye drops, and reactive agents for diagnostic tests are also in short supply.

The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has announced plans to allow private US companies to deliver aid, despite opposition from aid agencies and many governments. Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s decision to appoint a new domestic intelligence chief has drawn criticism and threats of a legal challenge.

The crisis in Gaza continues to worsen, with over 750 people killed and 2,000 injured across the territory over the past week.
