Gaza Hunger Crisis: Over 600 Wounded as Ceasefire Discussions Stall

The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with at least 91 people killed and 600 wounded over the past 24 hours while waiting for aid. US envoy Steve Witkoff visited Israel for ceasefire discussions and food distribution inspections, but tensions remain high.

Gaza is facing a severe famine crisis, with seven children dying of hunger in one day, bringing the total number of malnutrition deaths to 154. The World Health Organization warned that a starving child can die from pain and weakness within months if not treated urgently.

The UN agency said it would take “months, if not years” to reverse the man-made tragedy. Social order has broken down in Gaza, with crowds of desperate people waiting for aid and looting vehicles when they arrive.

Israel controls aid crossings into Gaza and has been accused of creating the hunger crisis through its blockades of humanitarian supplies. The US has proposed new measures to increase aid access, but humanitarians say it’s not enough.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha) said the amount of food being brought into Gaza is “far from enough”. Cyprus announced plans to reopen a sea route to ship humanitarian aid to Gaza, but more planning is needed.

Ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas have stalled, with both sides blaming each other for the collapse. Israeli officials warned that if Hamas does not become more flexible, Israel will reimpose a tight siege on humanitarian aid into Gaza.
