A devastating humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Gaza, with at least two people dying each day due to malnutrition in the past week alone. Aid agencies warn that Israel’s prolonged siege of the territory is causing “mass starvation” that’s spreading rapidly.
The Hamas-run health ministry has recorded a surge in deaths, including 19-year-old Abdullah Omar Jendeia, who was killed while searching for food near an aid truck. His sister, Nadreen, described him as kind-hearted and fun-loving, adding that he had dreams of opening his own business after the war.
Another victim is Ahmed Alhasant, 41, whose brother Yehia said malnutrition caused his weight to plummet from 80kg to just 35kg. Mohamed Kullab, 29, was also killed in an air strike, leaving behind a family dependent on him for support.
The Israeli military claims it took precautions to mitigate civilian harm but disputes the numbers of those killed. The UN warns that humanitarian conditions in Gaza are deteriorating at an “accelerating” pace, with at least 10% of Gazans suffering from acute malnutrition.
