Hundreds of people gathered in the largest anti-Hamas protest in Gaza since the war with Israel began, calling for the group to step down from power. The protesters, many wearing face masks, chanted “out, out, out, Hamas out” as they marched through the streets of Beit Lahia.
Hamas officials condemned those who participated in the protests, accusing them of pushing “suspicious political agendas”. The group has been in charge of Gaza since 2007 and has faced increasing opposition from Palestinians.
The protest came after Israel resumed its military campaign in Gaza following a US proposal to extend the ceasefire. Hamas rejected the deal, blaming Israel for abandoning the original agreement.
Pro-Hamas supporters downplayed the significance of the protests, but protesters like Mohammed Diab said they will not be silenced. “We refuse to die for anyone… Hamas must step down and listen to the voice of the grieving,” he said.
The protests are part of a growing trend of open criticism of Hamas in Gaza, which has been marked by widespread destruction and displacement since the war began. An estimated 70% of buildings have been damaged or destroyed, and there are shortages of food, fuel, medicine, and shelter.
Since Israel’s military operations resumed on March 18, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed and thousands displaced. The conflict has left a trail of devastation and death in its wake.
