Gaza School Attack: 31 Dead, Including Children, After Israeli Strike

Horrific images have emerged from Israel’s latest attack on a school-turned-shelter in Gaza City, where a young girl is seen trying to escape the flames after a classroom she was sleeping in was engulfed by fire. The attack has left at least 31 people dead, including children.

The Israeli military claims the school was used as a “command and control centre” for Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movements, but health officials have confirmed that it was a shelter for displaced Palestinians. International humanitarian law prohibits attacks on civilian infrastructure, including schools.

The attack has raised concerns about the safety of civilians in Gaza, with many shelters being overwhelmed by displaced people seeking refuge. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees warned that “no place is safe” and that sanitation conditions are dire.

The conflict in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of at least 53,000 Palestinians, including women, girls, health sector professionals, and journalists. A recent study estimated that fatalities were probably underreported by 41%, with 59.1% of those killed being women, children, or people over the age of 65.
