Gaza Seeks $6.5 Billion in Emergency Aid for Homeless Palestinians

Palestinian officials are appealing for billions of dollars in emergency aid to address the immediate needs of displaced people in Gaza, where fighting has paused and thousands are left homeless.

The Palestinian Authority estimates that temporary housing is needed for over two million people in Gaza, with a total funding requirement of $6.5 billion before long-term reconstruction can begin. Hamas, the militant group controlling Gaza, requests 200,000 tents and 60,000 caravans to provide shelter for displaced Gazans.

Aid shipments are being delayed due to impediments in importing medical and shelter equipment, which Israel considers to have “dual use” potential. Heavy machinery is waiting at the border crossing to clear millions of tonnes of rubble left by the war, but its importation is also being hindered.

Countries such as Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, Turkey, and China are ready to provide assistance, but Palestinian officials blame Israel for the delays. The international community’s efforts to help come after a ceasefire brokered by Egypt and Qatar was reached, which has temporarily halted fighting in Gaza.

The situation remains dire, with over half a million people returning home to find their houses destroyed and no place to stay, no tents, or caravans available. Palestinian officials urge the world to remember those affected and for aid to be delivered urgently to address the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
