The conflict in Gaza since October 7, 2023, has claimed more journalist lives than major conflicts like the US Civil War, World Wars I and II, and Vietnam War. Since 2000, governments and terrorist groups have suppressed news coverage through various means, leading to a culture of impunity and “news graveyards” in conflict zones.
Threats to journalists worldwide are escalating. In 2023, an average of one journalist was killed every four days, while by 2024, it’s become once every three days. Local journalists bear the brunt, facing extraordinary violence while impairing news coverage and the global information ecosystem. The decline of foreign correspondents in conflict zones has further reduced critical knowledge, creating more “news graveyards.” Reliable information is crucial for local populations’ wellbeing and enlightening the world on conflicts’ causes and civilian tolls.
