Gazan Doctor Dies from Wounds After Israeli Strike Kills 9 Children

A doctor who was wounded in an Israeli strike on his home that killed nine of his children has died from his injuries, according to medical officials and his family. Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar, a married couple’s father of ten, was severely wounded in the strike on their Khan Yunis home in May.

At the time of writing, only two family members have survived: the mother, Alaa, and her son Adam, who was also seriously wounded in the strike. Dr. al-Najjar’s colleagues reported that he had no ties to Hamas and were surprised by the strike, as it occurred just minutes after he returned home from dropping off his wife at work.

The Gisha Legal Center for Freedom of Movement had appealed to the IDF for Dr. al-Najjar and his son to receive urgent medical care abroad, citing life-threatening injuries from the strike. The World Health Organization has expressed its willingness to treat patients from Gaza in Malta and Ireland.

Dr. al-Najjar was critically injured, with severe bleeding, skull fractures, and a serious injury to his right limb that required amputation of one finger. His colleagues said Alaa continued working at the hospital despite her husband’s condition, periodically checking on him. The IDF has denied harming uninvolved individuals but has been criticized for not limiting its evacuation orders in time.

The Israeli strike occurred as more than 80 percent of Gaza is currently under evacuation orders or direct Israeli control, leaving residents with limited space to inhabit.
