Local content creators in Gaza, who initially gained popularity for their food and recipe videos, have adapted to the crisis by posting from food kitchens. Hamada Sho, a popular social media influencer, explained that making food videos provides a sense of hope during difficult times.
However, the lack of aid entering Gaza has skyrocketed ingredient prices, limiting the availability of supplies. “Now I can’t cook larger quantities,” Sho said. “Whether it was rice, beans or anything, the most important thing is that people have at least one meal a day.”
Aid distribution points are being set up by the Israeli government and US authorities, but aid organizations face criticism for the system’s effectiveness. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has classified the entire Gaza Strip as Phase 4, indicating acute food insecurity.
Community kitchens are becoming increasingly reliant on donations to meet the growing demand for meals. Despite these efforts, many content creators have reported a significant decrease in meal production due to the shortage of ingredients.
Humanitarian agencies have condemned the slow arrival of aid, with UNICEF stating that “five trucks, nowhere near” are not enough. The World Health Organization (WHO) has described the situation as “one of the world’s worst hunger crises.”
As the crisis deepens, food videos have become a lifeline for many in Gaza, providing hope and sustenance during a challenging time.
