Gaza is facing its worst humanitarian crisis in nearly two years of war, with widespread malnutrition and starvation affecting nearly 200 children daily. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) has been operating for 58 days, but its supplies have only lasted a fortnight.
The situation is dire, with empty shelves and soaring prices making it impossible for Palestinians to access basic necessities. Flour, which used to sell at the market rate, now costs over 30 times more due to the Israeli blockade. Even aid groups are witnessing their colleagues and partners wasting away due to lack of food.
The World Health Organization’s head, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, described Gaza’s situation as “mass-starvation” and “man-made”. The Israeli government has blocked medical supplies, further exacerbating the crisis.
Local people and doctors describe the desperation and fear that comes with not having access to basic food. Umm Youssef al-Khalidi, a mother of five, had to share a bag of rice and two potatoes with her children after going without food for four days. She fears losing her family if she doesn’t get them the aid they need.
The situation is heartbreaking, with children who were once excellent students now sitting on the edge of the street under a bombed mosque, selling bracelets for scraps of food. The Israeli government’s actions have created a deadly calculus where families must choose between sending one adult or multiple children to try and get food, leaving them without care in the process.
As Gaza descends further into famine, the international community is witnessing a devastating humanitarian crisis unfold. The situation demands immediate attention and action from all parties involved to address this man-made disaster.
