Khamis Imarah walked back into his home in northern Gaza City, where almost nothing remained after 15 months of war. The streets were lined with rubble, and the once-thriving community was now a desolate landscape. Khamis, along with his brother Ahmad, had made the perilous journey north to assess the destruction left behind by the conflict.
The brothers’ story is one of heartbreak and resilience. Of their 60 family members, only 11 survived the war. Their own homes were hit multiple times, leaving only memories and a few scattered belongings. Khamis’s wife died in an Israeli strike just a week after giving birth to a baby girl who was also killed.
As they walked through the devastated neighborhood, Ahmad pointed up at the sky, his eyes filled with tears. “Why did they tell us to go south? Imagine a four-year-old boy telling you here is my mother and here is my aunt… all ripped in pieces.” The Israeli military’s actions had erased entire families, leaving behind only death and destruction.
Despite the devastation, Khamis remains determined to stay in Gaza. He believes it is his ancestral homeland and that he will rebuild despite the odds. “I am from Gaza and I won’t leave. Even if it was harder and more difficult than this, I want to live in Gaza and I won’t leave it.”
Khamis’s words echo a sense of resilience that has defined many Gazans during the conflict. As they work to rebuild their homes and communities, they are also fighting for their right to exist as a people.
The international community has raised concerns about the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza, with some leaders suggesting “cleansing” the territory by relocating Palestinians to other countries. Such comments have sparked outrage across the Middle East, with Egypt and Jordan rejecting them outright.
As Khamis looks around at the destruction, he knows that his journey is far from over. He will continue to fight for a future where Gazans can live without fear of violence or displacement. The rebuilding efforts are slow, but they are underway, driven by determination and resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity.
