GBS Outbreak in Pune: 73 Cases of Rare Neurological Disorder Spotted

A recent surge in cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) has been reported in Pune city, where the total number of cases now stands at 73. These cases include 47 women and 26 men, with 14 currently on ventilator support. The Maharashtra State Health Department has formed a Rapid Response Team to investigate this unexpected increase following an initial discovery of 24 suspected cases earlier in the week.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare neurological condition characterized by the immune system attacking part of the peripheral nervous system, leading to muscle weakness and loss of sensation in legs and arms. While it is more common in adults and males, anyone can be affected. Though alarming, GBS does not lead to an epidemic or pandemic.

Pune’s health officials are actively monitoring the situation closely with local authorities, including the Pune Municipal Corporation and Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. So far, over 7,200 homes have been surveyed in urban and rural areas, revealing a concerning trend of affected individuals across multiple neighborhoods.

The health department is working to contain the outbreak and provide necessary support to those affected. Authorities are emphasizing the importance of public awareness and encouraging residents to report symptoms promptly if they arise.
