Gemini Replacing Google Assistant on Wear OS Smartwatches

Google has confirmed that its Gemini AI assistant will replace Google Assistant on smartwatches running Wear OS. The update is set to arrive as a straightforward app update, bringing the features of Gemini to users’ wrists.

A recent decompiled version of the Android app reveals how Gemini will work on Wear OS. Users can activate the feature by holding down the side button or saying “Hey Google” when their watch is fully awake. The functionality remains largely unchanged from Google Assistant, with capabilities such as setting alarms and timers, messaging contacts, and accessing @Gmail and @Google Maps yet to be confirmed.

However, some features will remain the same, including a warning about Gemini making mistakes, Location and Voice Match settings, and the At a Glance tile that lets users pin two commands. The exact launch date for Gemini on Wear OS is still unclear, with speculation suggesting it may coincide with the launch of a flagship smartwatch.
