Google has rolled out a new integration for its AI assistant Gemini, allowing users to control their smart home devices using the Google Home app on Android devices. The feature is currently in Public Preview and will eventually replace the Google Assistant.
To access this functionality, users must be enrolled in the Public Preview for Google Home. They can then open the Google Home app, select “Public Preview,” and press “Join Public Preview” to enroll their account.
With this integration, users can use natural language commands to control their smart home devices. For example, saying “the sun is too bright in the living room” will close the blinds, while asking “help me clean up the kitchen” will start a robot vacuum.
However, there are some limitations. The feature is only available on Android phones and restricted to English prompts. It also cannot control smart security devices such as gates, cameras, locks, doors, and garage doors. On non-Gemini devices like Nest smart speakers and displays, users will still be using Google Assistant.
This marks a significant milestone for Gemini as it gains crucial functionality previously reserved for the Google Assistant. The integration is expected to continue rolling out over the coming weeks.
In related news, the Google Pixel 9 Pro boasts a powerful Tensor chip, allowing it to handle AI features on-device and integrate with Gemini seamlessly.
