A pathologist has proposed an unusual theory about the deaths of veteran actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa, who were found dead in their Santa Fe home on February 26. Dr. James Gill believes that either Hackman or Arakawa may have died from a “broken heart” due to the shock of finding each other dead.
Gill explained that when people experience such a traumatic event, their adrenaline levels increase and can put their heart into an irregular rhythm. This can lead to symptoms similar to a heart attack. However, he emphasized that the only way to confirm this theory is through autopsy and toxicology testing.
According to Gill, Hackman had a history of heart disease and was using a pacemaker, which would not be unusual if he had collapsed. The question remains as to why Arakawa also collapsed, assuming she would have found him and sought help.
Gill noted that it’s possible that Arakawa died first, causing Hackman to collapse from stress while trying to find her or get help. However, the autopsy results will determine whether Arakawa had heart disease or cancer.
The investigation into their deaths has found no signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, external trauma, or foul play. The couple’s bodies were found in a state that suggested they died days or weeks before being discovered. Their Australian Kelpie mix dog, Zinna, was also found deceased in her crate.
