Actress and former concert pianist Betsy Hackman was found dead in her Santa Fe home along with their kelpie mix dog Zinna, who also died of dehydration and starvation. The cause of death for both has been ruled as natural causes from severe dehydration and starvation, but an investigation is ongoing to confirm the timeline of events leading up to their deaths.
The autopsy report indicates that Betsy Hackman died from heart disease with complications from Alzheimer’s disease, while Gene Hackman’s death was attributed to heart disease. The couple had moved to Santa Fe decades ago and led a private life.
Zinna, one of the couple’s three dogs, was found dead in a crate near Betsy Hackman’s body, while two other dogs survived. Authorities collected cellphones from the home and are still gathering information to confirm the timeline of events leading up to the deaths.
A representative for the estate has requested that autopsy and investigative reports be kept private, citing concerns over privacy, but it will be up to a state district judge to decide on this request.
