Generation Ship Chrysalis Aims to Keep 1,000 Humans Alive for 250 Years

A groundbreaking study has designed a self-sustaining spaceship capable of taking humans on a one-way journey to Alpha Centauri. The “Chrysalis” concept, winner of the Project Hyperion competition, envisions a vessel that can house 1,000 passengers over multiple generations.

The ship’s design features a sophisticated array of biome ecosystems, including food production rooms, libraries, parks, and even sports complexes. A unique 130-meter-high “cosmos dome” allows passengers to float freely in space while gazing at the stars. The ship would be powered by nuclear fusion reactors and feature concentric cylinders generating artificial gravity.

The Chrysalis is divided into several “shells,” each with a specific function, including an agriculture and biomes section designed to recreate Earth’s diverse environments, a genetic bank storing seeds and DNA from various species, and a closed-loop system for water and nutrient recycling. The ship’s design prioritizes sustainable practices, such as plant-based food production and limited animal space.

The vessel’s third shell is dedicated to living quarters, with 20 sectors containing module houses for the 1,000 inhabitants. These modular homes offer personal space while fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose. Communal spaces like parks, libraries, and recreation areas help maintain mental well-being during the long journey.

A notable aspect of Chrysalis is its cosmos dome, which provides a panoramic view of the stars and serves as the gathering space for the “Chrysalis Plenary Council.” The dome faces backwards, toward the ship’s origin—the Sun and Earth. This design aims to create a thriving community in the vast expanse of space, emphasizing social cohesion and sustainability.
