Quarterback Geno Smith has spoken publicly about his relationship with Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll for the first time since being traded to the Las Vegas Raiders. Smith expressed gratitude towards Carroll, who gave him an opportunity when many others wouldn’t have, and credited him as a reason why he wanted to join the Raiders.
During their time together in Seattle, Smith played five of his six seasons under Carroll and saw significant growth, playing in 37 games and throwing for 8,641 yards, 55 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions. Carroll’s trust in Smith was evident, as he allowed him to lead the team after Russell Wilson’s trade to the Denver Broncos.
The bond between Smith and Carroll is strong, with Smith calling Carroll “legendary” due to his willingness to let players be themselves and his track record of winning. When asked about playing for Carroll, Smith said he would “run through a wall” for him.
Carroll echoed Smith’s sentiments, stating that Smith has been a winner since being given the opportunity to lead the team. The Raiders have seen significant improvement under Smith, with three straight losing seasons and six different quarterbacks starting at the position since Derek Carr’s departure.
Smith signed a multi-year extension with the Raiders, reportedly worth up to $85.5 million, and is eager to prove himself as one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks. He has also expressed admiration for Tom Brady, having recently spent time with him after his trade to the Raiders.
The Raiders’ general manager, John Spytek, praised Smith’s arrival, stating that he believes Smith’s journey can serve as a valuable resource for the rest of the team.
