German AfD Party Embroiled in Controversy Over “Deportation Tickets”

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has sparked controversy after distributing campaign flyers that resemble “deportation tickets” in Karlsruhe. Police have launched an investigation into the local branch of the party over the flyers, which were deemed to be inciting racial hatred.

The flyers, modeled after airplane tickets, feature manipulated flight details and contain messages such as “Only remigration can save Germany” and “It’s nice at home too”. Critics claim they were targeted at people with a migration background, sparking complaints from both the public and Left party members who threatened to report the AfD district branch.

The AfD’s Baden-Württemberg state branch defended the flyers, stating they were aimed at all eligible voters, while police confirmed an investigation is underway. The campaign bears similarities to one previously used by the National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD), which has since been banned from receiving state funding.

AfD politician Marc Bernhard rejected any association with the NPD’s 2013 campaign, but the party’s chancellor candidate Alice Weidel has publicly embraced the term “remigration”, a strategy widely understood to mean mass deportation of people with a migrant background.
