A devastating car ramming attack at a crowded Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany has left five people dead and hundreds injured. The driver involved, identified as 50-year-old Taleb A., a Saudi Arabian national living in East Germany, has been taken into custody.
Governor Reiner Haseloff described the incident as an intentional attack, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the “terrible act” that killed so many people. The suspect had previously expressed anti-Islam views on social media and was critical of German authorities for not doing enough to combat Islamism in Europe.
An investigation is ongoing, with police finding no explosives or incriminating material at the suspect’s home. Authorities believe the suspect acted alone, but are still searching for further evidence. The attack came just eight years after a similar incident in Berlin that killed 12 people.
