German Defense Minister Pistorius Arrives in Ukraine for Support Show

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has arrived in Kyiv to demonstrate Europe’s support for Ukraine ahead of US President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Pistorius stated that his visit aims to reassure Ukraine psychologically and politically, as the country faces a war with Russia.

The German minister plans to discuss further aid with the Ukrainian government and assess the military situation. He also intends to signal Berlin’s backing for Kyiv heading into Germany’s upcoming elections.

Pistorius believes Ukraine requires support due to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to regain ground before Trump’s inauguration on January 20. Germany is one of Ukraine’s top military backers, with ongoing debates about its continued support ahead of the German election on February 23.

The NATO summit in June will discuss increasing defense spending, with a target of 2% of national GDP initially proposed and 3% suggested by some experts. Trump recently urged a 5% goal.

Pistorius will continue talks initiated during his visit to Poland, focusing on industrial cooperation for arms production in Ukraine and supporting Kyiv’s capacity expansion.
