A German space start-up, Isar Aerospace, successfully launched its orbital rocket from Norway on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in European space travel. The Spectrum rocket, which is 28 metres long and has a diameter of 2 metres, crashed into the sea just 30 seconds after liftoff, but Isar Aerospace hailed the test flight as a success.
According to Daniel Metzler, CEO and Co-founder of Isar Aerospace, the company’s goal was to gather data during the first flight, which it achieved. The company has set its sights on catering to the growing demand for flexible satellite launch services.
Isar Aerospace is seen as a potential rival to US-based SpaceX and Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos. The European space industry still lags behind countries like China and India, but Isar Aerospace’s achievement marks an important step forward.
The company’s managing director, Marie-Christine von Hahn, called for increased financial support for the European space industry to ensure competitiveness and independence. She emphasized the need for alternatives to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite constellation.
With its successful launch, Isar Aerospace has cemented its position as a leader in the European space sector, paving the way for further innovation and progress.
