A mudslide caused by heavy rains led to a deadly train derailment in southern Germany on Sunday, killing three people and injuring 41 others. The police stated that the water from the rain caused a landslide on the embankment near the tracks, which likely contributed to the accident.
The train was heading towards Ulm when it went off the rails near Riedlingen, about 30 miles north of Lake Constance. Three people were killed, including the driver, another crew member, and a passenger. Many of the injured were passengers, and rescue workers worked through the night to treat the wounded and transport them to hospitals.
Multiple emergency helicopters assisted in the evacuation efforts, which were aided by news footage showing severely bent tracks and large amounts of mud on several parts of the track. The derailment is considered one of the deadliest rail crashes in Germany since 2022, when a similar accident occurred near Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria, also caused by faulty tracks.
