Rabea Rogge, a 29-year-old robotics researcher from Berlin, has made history as the first German woman to venture into space. Rogge spent four days aboard the SpaceX Dragon capsule in an orbit over the Earth’s polar regions.
The mission, called Fram2, was privately commissioned by billionaire Chun Wang and included three other travelers: Norwegian film director Jannicke Mikkelsen, Australian polar guide Eric Philips, and Rogge herself. The trip took place off the southern coast of California due to safety reasons, instead of the usual US east coast.
Rogge coordinated the mission’s research focus on microgravity’s effects on the human body and the growth of mushrooms in zero gravity. The team conducted 22 experiments, capturing the first x-ray images in space. Rogge described her goal as overcoming boundaries while creating new opportunities for space travel and science.
