Germany Arrests Suspect Over Nord Stream Pipeline Attack

Germany has arrested a Ukrainian national over alleged involvement in the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which transported Russian gas to Europe. The suspect, Serhii K., was detained near Rimini, Italy, in cooperation with Italian authorities.

The attack on September 26, 2022, resulted in underwater explosions that rendered three pipelines inoperable, sparking controversy over Russia’s intentions behind the sabotage. Investigators believe the individual helped coordinate the attack and planted explosives on the pipelines.

The incident has been shrouded in mystery since no one has claimed responsibility for the explosions. A subsequent investigation by German authorities concluded in August 2024, leading to an arrest warrant for a suspected ringleader, Volodymyr Z., who was living in Poland at the time. The Ukrainian government denies any involvement in the incident.

The Nord Stream pipelines were part of a network that delivered Russian gas to Europe before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
